What is a Gorge Hook?

I made a reference to the ancient use of a gorge hook by primitive fishermen. A couple of readers wanted to know more about this, so here it is. It may be good to know some day.

A gorge-hook as used by primitive fishermen, is not a hook at all, in the sense of having a crook or hook and barb on one end. Rather, it is a straight piece of stick or bone that has been sharpened on both ends and notched a bit in the middle where a fishing line can be securely tied without it slipping fro or to under pressure. The stick is then cocked up to where it is straight with the fishing line. The bait is then secured around it, holding it just so. When a fish takes the bait and gulps the straight gorge-hook along with it and starts her run--the sharpened ends of the stick straighten out and presumably gorges and sticks into the fish's throat and is caught. These can be quite effective and is worthy of knowing for survival purposes.

I made up  few of these for a survival video I am doing. Although I have never caught a fish with one of these, I have every confidence that I can and will. They are said to be very effective using worms or cut-bait or blood-bait or dough balls for drum, and catfish, although I have not doubt that game-fish can also be taken with them. Before trying these, check their legality in your jurisdiction. I will try them in my pond. Whenever I do so, I will report my results here and show the fish and how the fish is caught. One disadvantage I see to using these is they may do more damage to fish that may pull loose or for-catch-and release for them to survive.

Of course in a survival situation this will be of little concern. In a survival situation, a fishing line may be braided out of unraveled fabric or fashioned from the fibers found in the stems and leaves of cattail reeds, green elm bark and other plants that lend themselves to making cordage. I plan to show this too in a future update to this post or a seperate post.

This is not the kind of cattail that I am referring to for cordage--unless you are ready for a scrap.
